History Summer Review

Mrs. Rice - AP US History Assignment

Advanced English / AP English: 2020-2021 Summer Assignments

Welcome to your Advanced English class for the next school year. Your English class comes with high expectations, including focus and maturity. The AP classes are considered college level classes and the advanced classes are preparing you for those. So, congratulations on challenging yourself! We are each looking forward to having you in class.

You will be reading one assigned book over the summer; you will need to obtain a copy of the book (library, Holly’s Book Rack in the Kroger plaza on Lexington Avenue, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, etc.) Also, please sign up for the appropriate class Remind at your earliest convenience. (Text the codes below to 81010 to receive Remind texts.)

Regarding Annotation: If possible, we encourage you to buy a copy of your assigned book, as it will be a great resource for you and will allow you to take notes in the book while reading. If you can’t write in your book, you will need to use sticky notes. This will be very handy come fall when you will be expected to discuss and to write about the book in class.

For Advanced 9 and Advanced 10, please make note of the Elements of Fiction, including but not limited to: Setting, Characters, Plot, Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution, Types of Conflict, Point of View, Theme, Imagery, Figurative Language, and Symbolism.

For AP Literature and AP Language students, please think about *what* the author is doing in the text, *how* he is doing it, *how* it’s effective, and *how* it is impacting the reader. As the College Board recommends, “Ask yourself often, ‘What does this sentence, paragraph, speech, stanza, or chapter mean?’” For AP Lit specifically: Analyze author’s purpose, focusing specifically on narrative techniques, theme, symbolism, and motif. Consider how each of these contribute to the novel as a whole. For AP Lang specifically: Think critically; make assumptions and inferences. It is vital that you form opinions about the content and style of the text before coming to class.

Assignments and Remind Information:

Ms. Olecki / Advanced English 9 – Text – Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Remind Code - @b89eaa

Ms. Duryea / Advanced English 10 – Text - In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Remind Code - @duryea20

Ms. Giefer / AP Literature – Text – A Prayer For Owen Meaney by John Irving. Remind Code - @msgief

Ms. Thorburn / AP Language – Text – Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Remind Code - @msthorbur

As you read, if you have questions, please feel free to email your teacher or send her a Remind message. We might not be able to get back with you immediately, but we do want to help you!

We also want to encourage you to strive to be able to use the descriptor “reader” in your personal list of characteristics. Read more than just the “summer assignment.” Read for fun. Read the news. Read a magazine. Just make sure you make it a habit and read every day!  As one of our favorite teacher authors reminds us: “There is a strong correlation between reading regularly for pleasure and academic success… It is also clear that the more a person reads, the better they write!” (Kittle). SO – if you want to succeed – you need to read!

When school begins, please make sure you bring to class your book with your annotations/notes, a positive attitude 😊, a strong work ethic, and your enthusiasm and willingness to contribute in an intellectual setting. We look forward to seeing you then!

Sincerely,
