LEXINGTON BOARD OF EDUCATION

Regular Meeting

February 17, 2021

The Lexington Board of Education met in regular session in the Robert H. Whitney Board of Education Meeting Room at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17, 2021.  Mr. Robert Whitney, President, called the meeting to order. Roll was called by the Treasurer.

Mr. Whitney welcomed vistiors to the meeting and asked if any visitors would like to be recognized.

Student Representative Report

Student Representative, Sydnee Detlef provided an update regarding various activities throughout the District, including the following:

Athletics

1. Boys' Basketball - Boys play February 17th at home against Mt. Vernon; they are currently the 9th seed. Then, they play in their sectional tournament game on the 23rd against Vermillion. The varsity team currently holds a record of 4-9.

2. Girls' Basketball - The girls travel to Oak Harbor, February 17th for their sectional tournament game, and their current record is 6-9. Avery C. just recently broke Lexington High School girls' basketball rebound record of 825, and now has over 850 rebounds so far. She is also 41 points away from 1,000 career points.

3. Swimming - The swim team is to compete in Districts on Friday, February 19th, and the state meet is next week.

4. Bowling - The bowling team has a match on February 17th, at home against Norwalk, and they will compete in sectionals on Saturday, February 20th.

5. The official start of spring sports is February 25th.

Clubs and Student Activities

1. Informed Teens - Informed teens wrote over 100 inspirational messages on post-it notes and placed them around the cafeteria.

2. Math Club - Math Club met before school on February 11th to take the required Math League test and still have two tests to make up from when they were virtual. They currently have 23 participants.

3. French Club - French Club has begun to plan for a Mardi Gras celebration to take place in the next couple weeks.

4. Academic Challenge Team - The OCC meet was cancelled due to weather and will be rescheduled within the month. Winter league starts February 22nd.

5. NHS - NHS hosted a blood drive on February 2nd.

6. Students began building their class schedules via a Google Form created by student services.

7. The ACT will be given to all juniors at the high school on February 23rd.

 

Administrator Report - Central Elementary

Central Elementary Principal Kathy Weidig and 4th grade Student Leaders from Central Elementary provided the Board with a presentation of all that is happening at Central Elementary. With the theme of "Central Kids Rock!", Mrs. Weidig and the students provided updates on morning announcements during remote learning, Google Survey after remote learning, Writers' Gallery, 4th grade Academic Challenge, Donations to the Humane Society, Central Military Kids, 3rd Grade Spelling Bee, Pie Throwing, Throw Back Thursdays, and Dr. Seuss Week. 

 Financial Items:

1.  The minutes from the January organizational and regular meetings were approved.

2.  The monthly financial report for January 2021 was presented.

3.  Approved the folloiwng appropriation modifications:

13-21 Motion by Mr. Roberts, seconded by Dr. Gottschling to approve the following personnel items:

Certified:

Leave of Absence: Accepted a leave of absence request for Anne Mutti, Jr. High English, for the 2021 - 2022 school year.

Employment: Approved Rita SToll and Kaitlyn Swartzmiller as Junior High morning monitors for the 2021-2022 school year.

Salary Adjustment:  Approved the salary adjustment for Austin Javurek ME + 10 to ME + 20.

Tuition Student:  Approved Steven Echelberger as a tuition student for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, per Board policy, allowing senior to complete senior year tuition free when parents have moved out of the district.

Discussion:

1. Graduation - Mr. Secrist discussed with the Board holding 2021 graduation at 7:00 p.m. on June 4th under the lights at the football stadium with rain dates of June 5th & June 6th.

2. Construction Update - Mr. Secrist shared a construction update with the Board along with an update on bid savings that totaled over $500k. Overall, the results were very positive from the project bids, both from a savings perspective and local participation perspective.

3. Substitute Teacher Pay - Mr. Secrist discussed the current status of District pay for substitute teachers and provided information on substitute pay for other Districts. Mr. Secrist shared that he and Mr. Whitesel review current substitute days and the impact an increase in sub pay would have on the budget. Based on all this information, Mr. Secrist recommended the Board consider an increase in substitute teacher pay to $100 per day for consecutive days 1-20, $110 for consecutive days 21-59, and base salary at Step 0 (per ORC) for consecutive days 60+.

14-21 Motion by Mr. Schuster, seconded by Mr. Stoner, to set the graduation date and time as June 4, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. at the football stadium with rain dates of June 5th and June 6th at 7:00 p.m.

15-21 Motion by Mr. Schuster, seconded by Mr. Stoner, to modify teacher substitute pay to $100 per day for consecutive days 1-20, $110 for consecutive days 21-59, and base salary at Step 0 (per ORC) for consecutive days 60+, effective February 18, 2021.

Certificate Section 5705.412, Ohio Revised Code

It is hereby certified that the Lexington Local School District Board of Education, Richland County, Ohio, has sufficient funds to meet the contract agreement, obligation, payment or expenditure for the above, and has in effect for the remainder of the fiscal year and succeeding fiscal year the authorization to levy taxes which, when combined with the estimated revenue from all other sources available to the district at the time of certification, are sufficient to provide operating revenues necessary to enable the district to operate an adequate educational program on all days set forth in its adopted school calendar for the current fiscal year and for a number of days in the succeeding fiscal year equal to the number of days instruction was or is scheduled for the current fiscal year.
