The Lexington Board of Education met in regular session in the Robert H. Whitney Board of Education Meeting Room at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2017.

Mr. Robert Whitney, President, called the meeting to order. Roll was called by the Treasurer.

VISITORS / COMMUNICATIONS / RECOGNITIONS

                         Mr. Whitney welcomed visitors to the meeting and asked if any visitors would like to be recognized. Mr. Whitney introduced members of the Board and administration as well as the Board's Student Representative Abigail Vincent. 

Kayla Heimann thanked the Board for their support last year in her professional development as she had the opportunity to participate in the Albert Einstein Distinguised Educator Fellowship Program in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Heimann shared her experiences with the Board, noting that there were only a total of 13 participants nationwide. She also noted that she had the opportunity to attend meetings at the White House, meet two former Secretaries of Education, and learn about various Federal STEM initiatives and resources available among various Federal agencies. She also noted that the group had the opportunity to visit 10 successful STEM schools to view and experience a number of exciting STEM programs within those schools. Mrs. Heimann expressed her excitement to bring her experiences and all that she learned back to Lexington and into the classrooms.  She indicated she has already started some computer programming with her 5th graders and discussed a potential robotics club in the future, noting there is a large push for computer science. Finally, Mrs. Heimann invited the Board to attend the annual Night Sky Watch to be held at Eastern Elementary on Thursday, October 19th. The Board thanked Ms. Heimann for sharing her experiences and for her excitement to bring those experiences back to benefit the students of Lexington.

Student Representative Abigail Vincent provided an update regarding District activities, including Athletics, Homecoming, Band, Academic Challenge, Chess Club, Journalism, National Honor Society, Drama, Key Club, Student Council, Spanish Club, Science Olympiad, Bio Club, LEO Club, Yearbook, French Club, Crochet-Along Group, and Math Club.  Abigail also shared that 10th graders will be hearling about CPR training as part of the health curriculum on Monday, October 23rd.

Eric Lehnhart shared concerns regarding band performances after football games as there have been multiple instances of the field being occupied by the visiting team after the conclusion of the game. Mr. Ziegelhofer indicated he would address this concern.

     FINANCIAL ITEMS 

58-17   Motion by made Mr. Heck, seconded by Mrs. Weirich to approve the following financial items:

1. The minutes from the September regular meeting were approved.

2. The monthly financial report for September 2017 was presented.

3. Accepted donations from the Lexington PTO in the amount of $1,000 each for Eastern, Western, and Central Elementary; $3,000 total

4. Approved an invoice from Richland County Health Department in the amount of $4,628.28 for nursing services from August 1, 2017 through September 8, 2017.

5. Approved the 5-Year Forecast for FY18 through FY22.

Other Business:  

Eastern Student Council Advisor: Approved the addition of Eastern Student Council to the list of "Approved Clubs" in Section I, #22 of the LTA negotiated agreement.

Tuition Student: Approved Julia Massey, 12th grade, as a tuition student for the 2017-2018 school year, per Board policy regarding parent moving out of the district during senior year.

Bus Stop Locations:  Approved the bus stop locations as currently assigned by the Transportation Department for the 2017-2018 school year.

Substitute List:  Approved the revised Lexington substitute list dated 09/20/2017 as presented by MOESC.

Substitute Nurse:  Approved the employment of Samantha Kessler as a substitute nurse effective 10/16/2017.

Coaching Recommendations:  Approved the coaching recommendations for the 2017-2018 school year (two contracts split three ways):

Amy Elgin - Junior High swim

Kim Perkins - Junior High swim

DISCUSSION ITEMS

1.  District Facebook Page - The Board discussed the District's new Facebook page that was recently launched thanks to the efforts of Kyle Trittschuh and two parent volunteers. The Board expressed their appreciation for the work that went into getting the page launched and noticed that there has been strong feedback and activity on the District page.  The Facebook usernmae for the District page is LexingtonSchools.

2.  Meet the Candidates Night - On November 1, 2017, there will be a Meet the Candidates night sponsored by Kiwanis in the high school auditorium at 7:00 p.m. This will be an opprotunity for the community to meet all candidates in the various local elections, including the Board of Education candidates.

Certificate Section 5705.412, Ohio Revised Code

It is hereby certified that the Lexington Local School District Board of Education, Richland County, Ohio, has sufficient funds to meet the contract agreement, obligation, payment or expenditure for the above, and has in effect for the remainder of the fiscal year and succeeding fiscal year the authorization to levy taxes which, when combined with the estimated revenue from all other sources available to the district at the time of certification, are sufficient to provide operating revenues necessary to enable the district to operate an adequate educational program on all days set forth in its adopted school calendar for the current fiscal year and for a number of days in the succeeding fiscal year equal to the number of days instruction was or is scheduled for the current fiscal year.
