The Lexington Board of Education met in regular session in the boardroom at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2017

Mr. Robert Whitney, President, called the meeting to order. Roll was called by the Treasurer.

VISITORS / COMMUNICATIONS / RECOGNITIONS

Mr. Whitney welcomed visitors to the meeting and asked if any visitors would like to be recognized.

Mr. Whitney also made available various publications and mailings.

 Art Teacher, Mary Haas, shared that congratulations are in order for Mr. Ziegelhofer as he received the Distinguished Educator for Art Education State Awarenessfor his support of the arts.  Mrs. Haas also shared that March is Art Appreciation month and asked Mr. Whitney to read the proclamation on March 1st at Eastern Elementary.Mrs. Haas then spoke to the Board about an idea known as Abandoned Art and asked the Board, Superintendent and Treasurer to participate after providing each with their own index card. All agreed to partiicpate, and Mrs. Haas explained that individuals are to create their own art on these cards, and they are to leave the art "abandoned" for others to find and either keep it, pass it on, or leave it for someone else to find.  Abandoned Art Discoveries are then to be shared on Facebook at Eastern Elementary Art Room.

                Student Representative Anne Olecki could not attend but provided a written update regarding District Activities, including the following:

 Arts:

Music groups are preparing for OMEA State Adjudication. Orchestra's is Friday, Feb. 17th in Granville, and Band's is the first week of March

The musical, Grease, is March 30th - April 2nd.

Senior/junior college panel was held last Friday;

An art student, Abigail, received two additional Gold Keys in the Scholastic Art Show and will be the second student to get into the Art Hall of Fame and will get her picture placed in the art hallway. 

The first student to achieve this honor was Rachel in 2015-16 school year.

The regional judging of the Governor's Art Show is March 4th at Willard.

Sports:

Almost all sports have started, or will be starting, post season play.

Girls' basketball plays in sectionals at Bucyrus, Feb. 22nd at 6:15 vs Tiffin Columbian.

Boys' basketball sectionals are March 3rd at Galion where we face winner of Norwalk and Shelby

Wrestling has one home meet left and then they go to tournament (individual)

26 swimmers and divers are going to districts. Diving was Feb. 15th and swimming is Feb. 17th at Bowling Green University

The girls' bowling team 20-1 and boys are 15-6. Postseason for boys is Feb. 18th and girls is Feb. 24th at Port Clinton.

Academics:

We have just started scheduling for next year.

Students are being encouraged to attend the ACT Boot camp on Saturday, March 11th.

Juniors are taking the ACT on March 21st for free at the high school to meet this year's state testing requirement. The ACT is also being offered April 8th, and all students are encouraged to sign up for this now.

Seniors

Most seniors have narrowed down their school of choice, and several have begun applying for scholarships.

Caps and gowns will be here on March 3rd.

 
FINANCIAL ITEMS  

11-17   Motion by made Mr. Heck, seconded by Mr. Stoner to approve the following financial items:

1. The minutes from the January organizational and regular meeting were approved.

2. The monthly financial report for Janaury 2017 was presented.

          3. Approved a private donation in the amount of $5,000 for the gymnasium video board.

          4. Approved a donation from Emerson/Therm-O-Disc in the amount of $500 for the 2017 high school MD prom.

          5. Appproved to pay invoices totaling $6,538.21 to Madison Local Schools for Title I services provided to District students attending non-public schools pursuant to the Title I budgeted amounts within the District CCIP.

     Retirement:  Accepted the retirement of Rick Vestal, Transportation, effective February 28, 2017.

     Resignation:  Accepted the resignation of Rachel Kastran, Transportation bus aide, effective March 1, 2017.

                     Employment:  Approved the employment of the following pending successful completion of all pre-employment requirements:

Ashley Whiting - Transportation, 4-hour bus aide, effective March 1, 2017, contract through rest of the 2016-2017 school year and a one year contract through 2018-2019, Food service sub, effective February 1, 2017

Lindsay Fensch - Food service sub

Courtney Smith - Food service, 4-hour general help/cashier, effective February 1, 2017 contract through rest of the 2016-2017 school year and one year contract through 2018-2019

Coaching Recommendations:  Approved the following coaching recommendations for the 2016-2017 school year:

Tuition Student: Approved the waiver of tuition for the following students:

Jacob Javurek - KG for the 2017-2018 school year per Board policy following a teacher parent

Jordan Wicker - 12th grade, for the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year, per Board policy regarding parent moving out of the district during senior year

Academic Mentor:  Approved the Academic Mentor job description.

Stipends:  Approved stipends to be paid to the Spring musical director, assistant director and instrumental director.

Treasurer Contract: - Approved a three-year contract for Treasurer, Jason Whitesel, through July 31, 2020.

Front and Center Turf:  Approved a proposal from Front & Center Turf to maintain high school football and soccer fields.

Substitute Nurse:  Approved the nursing sevices of Alisa Reinhart as district substitute RN, at the hourly rate on her contract for the 2016-2017 school year, pending successful completion of all pre-employment requirements.

Substitute Lists:  Approved the revised Lexington substitute lists dated 01/11/17 and 02/15/17 as presented by MOESC.

Certificate Section 5705.412, Ohio Revised Code

It is hereby certified that the Lexington Local School District Board of Education, Richland County, Ohio, has sufficient funds to meet the contract agreement, obligation, payment or expenditure for the above, and has in effect for the remainder of the fiscal year and succeeding fiscal year the authorization to levy taxes which, when combined with the estimated revenue from all other sources available to the district at the time of certification, are sufficient to provide operating revenues necessary to enable the district to operate an adequate educational program on all days set forth in its adopted school calendar for the current fiscal year and for a number of days in the succeeding fiscal year equal to the number of days instruction was or is scheduled for the current fiscal year.
