MockCaldecott

Central Elementary had its 3rd Annual Mock Caldecott Contest! Students and teachers read and evaluated more than 20 picture books, using criteria similar to that of the Caldecott Committee of the American Library Association. Each grade level chose one book for their Mock Caldecott Medal and two Honor books. The discussions and excitement around their new favorite books were truly inspiring!

NationalBrushDay

On November 1st, Central Elementary School celebrated National Brush Day. National Brush Day reminds us to follow the ADA guidelines: brushing your teeth twice daily has a direct impact on cavity prevention. A HUGE THANK YOU to Dr. Drew Basinger, DDS for the generous donation of toothbrushes. We are grateful to you and your staff.

LexintonLibrary23

Our second-grade students had an amazing adventure at the Lexington Library last week! They dove into a world of books, discovering new stories and expanding their imaginations. Reading is so much fun!

CoffmanSaveFred

Mrs. Coffman’s third-grade students at Central Elementary have been learning the qualities of a good citizen, which include cooperation and building a strong classroom community. During the first week of school, they worked together on the “Save Fred”  activity. They had to save a gummy worm who had fallen out of his boat and wasn’t wearing his life jacket. Partners used paper clips to get Fred safely back into his boat and put on his life jacket. It was a worm-derful lesson in cooperation!

2ndGradeMath 23

Adding a splash of fun to second-grade math at Central Elementary! These young mathematicians are diving into skill review and exploring it all with a smile. Learning + fun = success!

CentralBioClub23

Mrs. Conover took members of the BioClub on a visit to Central Elementary. They created individual bee awareness bags to teach 90 students the importance of bees and how to protect them. First graders were taught about different types of bees and about how bees are a benefit to the environment. BioClub members also helped each student plant flower seeds to attract bees.

JHArtCommunity 2

Ms. Frazier's 8th graders had fun with a community service project for our youngest students. At Western, our elementary students don't like to color with broken crayons. Instead of throwing the broken ones away and opening new packs, the 8th graders began melting them down to create new crayons and giving them to the Preschool and Kindergarten students at LCDC, Western and Central. Attached are just Mrs. Betcher's (Western) Kindergarten class pics. Ms. Frazier loves creating lessons that involve our community! This semester her 7th graders will be creating bookmarks for the 1st graders at Western and Central. Exciting stuff!

CentralEnergyScience

Students in Mrs. Winner's first-grade class at Central Elementary learned about the different types of energy in science. They wrapped up the unit by conducting a science experiment using baking soda and vinegar to blow up a balloon! Students worked in small groups to combine the substances and record observations on the chemical reaction. Students were blown away with the results!

CentralPumpkinProject

Ms. Shaffer’s first-grade students at Central Elementary had fun investigating pumpkins using their math and science skills. They measured their pumpkins using a variety of methods, counted the seeds with groups of ten and more! This lesson was a smash hit!

CentralSeuss19

Central Elementary participated in Dr. Seuss Week. The students had such great fun, until it was done (the staff had a great time as well). From Dr. Seuss... "Think and Wonder, Wonder and Think." "The more that you read, the more you will know.  The more that you know, the more places you'll go." "You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes.  You can steer yourself any direction you choose."
