Reading:

 Guided Reading Groups:

We work on many skills as we read these books.  Some examples are reading with  fluency and expression, focusing on key vocabulary, recalling main ideas, sequencing important events, identifying the beginning, middle, & end, and comprehending the story.

  Accelerated Reader:

Students are encouraged to take Accelerated Reader Tests as they complete books at home and school.  These tests are designed to help the students and teacher recognize comprehension abilities.  You can access the Accelerated Reader Quiz List from the Central Web
Site. The quizzes can be found by author, title, or book level.  To encourage students to take AR Tests, they can earn a sticker for each test score above 80%.  After getting a set number of stickers the students may choose out of the treasure box. If your child reads an approved chapter book and receives an 80% or above they will get two stickers for passing that test.  Please reinforce at home to your child the importance of choosing a book that they feel comfortable reading and that they read the book carefully.

Homework:

At the beginning of the week students will bring home a Reading Record Sheet, in which they are to read a minimum of 10 minutes nightly.  They are to record the time, have an adult signature, and return on Friday.  A paper to review skills taught in the classroom, may also be sent home throughout the week for practice and due on Friday.  Every Monday (or first day of week) the students will also need to return their "Weekend News Web" and a paper from the previous week  to add to their "Proud Paper Portfolio".

If homework is not received students will have to move their clips and they will be expected to complete the work during their recess time.  Those students that repeatedly do not turn in their homework will have other consequences as well.

  Spelling:

A weekly list of word wall words will be sent home on the first day of the week.  A spelling list test is then given on the last day of the week.  A sentence dictation test will also be given on Fridays.
On each day of the week the students will do various activities to practice their spelling words.  Some of these activities include copy & spell, visual memory, word meaning, word study, word search, ABC order, and ladder spelling.  Please practice regularly at home as well.

  Language Arts:

Every day we work on editing skills: capital letters, punctuation marks (periods, questions marks, exclamation marks, commas, and apostrophes) spelling, and possessives, proper verb usage, singular and plural nouns, proper nouns and contractions through Daily Oral Language Sentences.  On Friday, the students will take a test on the skills covered during the week.

On Mondays and Wednesdays during centers the children will write creative stories on given topics.  Then on Fridays they will have the opportunity to share and peer edit their stories.  By the end of each nine weeks, the students will take some of their stories to final copy.

Throughout the year the children will create books about their friends from the "All About Me" bulletin board.  These books will be sent home at the end of the year.  The children enjoy reading these books each day.

We will also write a "Weekend News" every Monday in which the students write at least 5 detailed sentences about their previous weekend.  Please make sure you take a few minutes each weekend to fill in the "Weekend News Web" & return on Mondays.  The students can enjoy these books at the end of the year too.

 Math:

We will complete Math Reviews and Problem Solving Activities daily.  On Friday a  test will be given over the skills covered that week.

We will take timed addition/subtraction facts tests Mon. - Thurs.  The students have 2 minutes to take each test consisting of 40 problems, and when they have successfully passed a test not missing more than one problem, then they move onto the next level.  These tests are part of the students' math grade. There will be one entry grade per nine weeks.  Please use flashcards and previous tests to practice at home.
